Avoiding Falls

Choose the Right Footwear

Your shoes are your first line of defence against slippery surfaces

• Opt for shoes with good traction: Rubber soles and deep treads provide better grip on wet or icy surfaces
• Avoid smooth soles: Dress shoes or high heels can increase your risk of slipping
• Consider ice grippers: These are attachments that improve traction on ice and are easy to remove when indoors

Plan Your Route

If you must venture out during bad weather

• Stick to treated paths: Choose paths or areas that have been salted or sanded
• Avoid shortcuts: Snowy lawns or unmaintained pathways can hide ice or uneven surfaces
• Allow extra time: Rushing increases the likelihood of a fall

Improve Your Balance

Keeping your balance is key to fall prevention

• Walk like a penguin: Take short, flat-footed steps with your weight over your feet
• Use walking aids: If needed, a cane or walking stick with an ice grip can provide extra stability
• Strengthen your core: Regular exercises such as yoga or tai chi can enhance balance and coordination

Be Prepared at Home

Bad weather can create hazards indoors as well

• Dry your shoes: Wet shoes create puddles that are easy to slip on
• Use rugs with grips: Prevent slipping on slick floors by using non-slip mats near entrances
• Install handrails: These are especially useful near stairs or steps
• Correct footwear: One of the most common fall risks in the older population is wearing slippers rather than soft-soled shoes in the house
Avoid walking in socks without shoes or in slippers without a sole or that have become sloppy with wear

Stay Alert

Your awareness can make a significant difference

• Check the weather forecast: Knowing conditions in advance allows you to prepare accordingly
• Carry a flashlight: Poor visibility can hide hazards like ice patches
• Avoid distractions: Focus on your footing rather than your phone

Maintain Foot Health

Healthy feet are strong and stable feet

• Trim toenails regularly: Overgrown nails can cause discomfort, altering your gait
• Wear orthotics if needed: Custom insoles can improve alignment and stability
• Address pain or discomfort: Any issues with your feet or ankles can affect balance, so don’t ignore them
