Cheshire Foot Clinic
The most commonly stated cause of heel pain in patients coming to our clinic is plantar fasciitis.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue that stretches between the heel and the toes on the sole of the foot. It supports the arch of your foot.
This condition is often caused by overuse such as excessive running, standing or walking. Wearing shoes that do not support your arch or cushion your feet can also result in plantar fasciitis. (“Plantar fasciitis | Nuffield Health”)
What are the symptoms?
Foot pain is the primary symptom. If you have plantar fasciitis the bottom of your foot may be very sore and tender to the touch. Often your symptoms will be worse when first getting out of bed in the morning or after a period of rest. Plantar fasciitis can be very painful, stop you from participating in activities and be a problem for a prolonged period if not treated effectively.
How do our Podiatrists treat plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a problem we come across frequently and treat successfully at the clinic. Following an assessment and diagnosis our Podiatrist may recommend a treatment programme and will work with you to help you get back to your activities without pain. Treatments we use to treat plantar fasciitis include:
- Footwear advice and changes
- A programme of rehabilitation exercises, stretching
- Changes in activity until the pain subsides
- Orthotics
- Shockwave therapy
- Laser Therapy
- Strapping/ Support hosiery
- Mobilisation/Manipulation
- Ultrasound guided corticosteroid injection
More cushioned footwear with better support may ease your symptoms.
Our Podiatrist may prescribe an exercise rehabilitation program to gently stretch and strengthen your plantar fascia and lower limb enabling you to return to exercise.
Off the shelf or custom orthotics will further support your foot.
Over the counter pain relief such as paracetamol or anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen may also help.
If your plantar fasciitis problems have been troubling you for a while and have become chronic, our Podiatrist may recommend a course of Shockwave Therapy.
We can also give you an ultrasound guided corticosteroid injection to relieve your symptoms.
