Problem Flat Feet?

Cheshire Foot Clinic – Everyone’s Feet Are Different

Our podiatrists frequently see patients complaining of flat feet. For some people, this is a normal condition from birth and never causes problems. For others, flat feet may be painful from an early age or part of a degenerative process. Some individuals have flat feet that aren’t painful but may cause discomfort in other areas, such as the knees or lower back. At Cheshire Foot Clinic in Knutsford, Cheshire, we specialise in addressing ankle or knee problems from flat feet by delivering targeted podiatric care to restore your comfort and improve your mobility. Our registered podiatrists provide effective, personalised treatments to resolve the problem with flat feet and revive your quality of life.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet, also known as “pes planus,” refer to a condition where the arch along the inside of the foot is minimal or absent. This causes the foot’s sole to rest almost completely on the ground. Arches typically form during childhood between the ages of three and ten. For many people, flat feet are a normal variation in foot shape and do not result in any issues. But in some cases, they may lead to discomfort or other related problems.

The shape of the foot is primarily determined by the structure of the bones, supported by the ligaments and muscles. A key muscle that helps maintain the arch is the Tibialis Posterior. If the tendon linked to this muscle sustains damage, the arch can collapse and cause the foot to flatten even further. There are two types of flat feet:

1. Flexible

The foot appears misaligned when standing but adjusts to a more normal shape when weight is removed, such as when sitting. This type of flat foot can often be repositioned manually.

2. Rigid

The foot retains a flattened position whether weight is applied or not. Unlike flexible flat feet, this condition can’t be shifted into a better alignment by hand.
